Product Development R&D – 12 month Placement Student


Eakin R&D functions as a developer of innovative ostomy and single-use surgical medical devices to support the wider Eakin Healthcare Group in their ambition to provide the best, user-focussed ostomy pouches, seals and supporting products.  Formed in 1974 by Tom Eakin, the family-run Eakin Group continues to grow and with the rapid expansion of the R&D Group, is creating the new benchmark in ostomy products, to give users the freedom and confidence to lead normal lives.

Reporting directly to the Development Leads, this is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and ambitious team. Applications are welcomed from students of technical disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Product Design. Successful candidates will gain valuable experience in the Design and Development of Medical Devices, will become familiar with operating in a busy group within a private sector medical device provider and learn from leaders in the field of Ostomy.



The role will depend on the successful candidate’s skill set, but they will contribute to the development of new products, primarily in ostomy. This may vary from early market conceptualisation to final industrialisation activities.

The following activities are typical of what the successful candidates may experience.

  • Contribute as a team member to the development of new devices, from early stage product concepts to ready for clinical trial product, in line with Eakin’s development strategy, Quality system and Development Process.
  • Contribute as a team member to allocated work-streams within development projects, to meet project targets and ensure products meet customer expectations and operational needs.
  • Provide input to technical reports and design documentation for internal and external users to review ensuring that the content is accurate and informed.
  • Provide engineering and process knowledge to input to activities and business decision making within speciality area.
  • Carry out diligent laboratory testing as directed, including creation of test protocols, designing and procuring test apparatus, analysis of results and report writing.
  • Student tasks will be allocated by your Line Manager and will contribute to the Deliverables of each project to which you are assigned.

The successful candidate will gain valuable experience of working within the regulated medical devices sector. For example, insights into the Medical Devices Directive, ISO13485, ISO14971 etc. will be gained.




  • Must be working towards a Degree level Technical Discipline, preferably in a Technical/Engineering related subject.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Will be comfortable with both the practical and theoretical aspects of product development.

  • Experience of using a 3D parametric CAD system such as solidworks
  • Experience of analytical engineering analysis
  • Experimental diligence and the ability to collect, analyse and interpret data
  • Working knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques and processes.
  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes
