  • Ostomy, incorporating our Eakin, Pelican and Respond brands. We manufacture and supply high quality ostomy pouches and skin friendly accessories internationally, including our flagship product, Eakin cohesive ®  Our award-winning discreet ostomy home delivery and nursing service, Respond, operates throughout the UK.
  • Respiratory, incorporating our Armstrong Medical brand. We manufacture innovative products for use in anaesthesia, respiratory and critical care including AquaVENT ® heated humidified circuits. For our Respiratory products we have a strong customer base in Europe, US and South America.
  • Surgical, incorporating our Eakin Surgical brands. Concentrates on the manufacture and distribution of both Eakin surgical instruments and other branded medical devices with an increasing emphasis on export business.

Our Operations team is located in 3 core sites in Comber (N Ireland), Coleraine (N Ireland) and Cardiff (Wales) with all of our manufacturing taking place in the UK.

We invest heavily in Research & Development and have a talented and innovative R&D function creating a pipeline of new product introductions across our therapeutic areas.  A separate Group Development team focuses on business opportunities for growth across the organisation and leads the sustainability strategy and action plan across Eakin Healthcare.



Eakin R&D Limited, part of the Eakin Healthcare Group, is now recruiting for a key position of Mechanical Engineer. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and provide key support by providing technical expertise in device performance as an integral part of the company’s development programmes.



  • Contribute to the development of new medical devices, from early concepts through to regulatory approval, in line with Eakin’s NPI strategy, Quality system and Development Process.
  • Contribute as a team member to allocated work-streams within design and development projects, to meet project targets and ensure end-product meets customer expectations and operational needs.
  • Provide input to and author technical reports and design documentation for internal and external users to review, ensuring that the content is accurate and informed.
  • Provide biomedical insights in relation to medical device and user interfaces and contribute to biocompatibility assessments on materials and products.
  • Adopt a continuous improvement approach by proactively seeking out development opportunities through research and attending training courses, to ensure that the R&D function has the right skills to deliver customer and business needs.
  • Provide mechanical engineering knowledge as an input to activities and business decision making within speciality areas.
  • Provide leadership in the development of theoretical/analytical/mathematical models of system or component parts to better understand and predict the operation of new medical devices and to quantify product specification parameters.
  • Lead the development of Test programmes for new devices, systems and components.
  • Support product development programmes in the technical analysis of mechanical designs.  This could include tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other appropriate engineering methodologies.
  • The candidate should strive to become a thought leader within the business in one specific area of expertise, such as biomedical engineering, biocompatibility or other technical function.
  • Inform Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) assessments to ensure that the parts that will form a product can be reliably and repeatedly manufactured and assembled.
  • Guide the selection of materials, backed up by a sound understanding of how they are predicted to work in the field.

  • Educated to Degree level in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or similar.
  • Able to demonstrate expertise in the application of engineering analysis to real world problems (e.g. FEA, FMEA, DFMA, tolerance analysis etc.)
  • Able to demonstrate working knowledge of experimental diligence and the ability to collect, analyse and interpret data.
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Be able to work in a multi-functional team and to build relationships with peers.
  • Have an ability to manage own time, work in a fast-paced environment and on multiple projects at one time.
  • Have a desire to implement the engineering theory taught and endeavour to continuously increase knowledge on subject matter appropriate to their role.



  • Further Post Graduate qualifications such as a Master’s degree
  • Experience in The Medical Devices sector and associated regulatory requirements, Polymer processing and polymer joining methods, lab equipment allied to the polymer or adhesives industries, Development of test methods to understand product reliability and failure modes, Engineering simulation methods and associated software (e.g. Matlab, Python, Abaqus etc), and CAD systems such as SolidWorks.





  • Working within the Development team to provide leadership in the theoretical modelling of our devices to better guide the selection of designs that will work.
  • Working alongside the Test Engineer(s) to ensure test programmes are measuring the important parameters.
  • Working alongside the Industrialisation Engineer(s) to support the realisation of new products in a volume manufacturing environment.
  • Working alongside Manufacturing to ensure the impact of technical decisions are understood fully by manufacturing.
  • Working alongside the Commercial team(s) to understand the commercial implications of technical decisions
  • Quality - ensuring all documentation is of an appropriate and consistent standard and always audit- ready.
